Norwich City in the Anglo-Scottish Cup

Norwich City played in the Anglo-Scottish Cup as part of the pre-season preparations for 4 seasons in the 1970’s.

The tournament was created in 1975 and played with a mix of English and Scottish teams. The competition replaced the Texaco Cup. The Anglo-Scottish Cup was eventually replaced by the Football League Group Cup.

Norwich City competed in the Anglo-Scottish Cup in the 75/76, 76/77, 77/78 and 78/79 seasons.

The Canaries were one of sixteen English clubs organized in four groups of four teams. The winners of each group went through to the Quarter-Final. They were joined by four Scottish teams that had won through a two-legged knock-out round.

City never qualified for the quarter-finals.

In the 75/76 competition, they lost 2-1 at home to Fulham, drew 1-1 with Chelsea and lost 4-1 at Bristol City. Norwich finished bottom of their group.

In 76/77, they drew all three games: Orient at home (0-0), Chelsea away (1-1) and Fulham away (1-1). City finished second in their group.

In 77/78, another draw at home to Orient (1-1), a defeat at home to Fulham (0-1) and draw at Chelsea (2-2). The Canaries were placed third in their group.

In 78/79, City were beaten at Notts County (2-1) before drawing at home to Mansfield Town (1-1) and Orient (0-0). Norwich finished third again in their group.

Programmes were issued for all of Norwich City’s games in the Anglo-Scottish Cup. Some were just single sheet issues including the large sheet for the game at Bristol City on 9th August 1975; a particularly rare and difficult programme to find as the paper quality wasn’t great.
