The Texaco Cup started in the 1970/71 season and continued for 5 seasons.
For the first 2 seasons, it involved clubs from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland that had not qualified for European football.
For the last 3 seasons, it just included 16 teams from England and Scotland.
Clubs competed in a straight knockout competition based on home and away ties for each round played during the season. This format was altered slightly for the last season in 1974/75 when the English teams competed in a groups first before going into knockout rounds with the Scottish clubs.
The Canaries participated in the Texaco Cup for 3 seasons – 1972/73, 1973/74 and 1974/75.
In 1972/73, City reached the final only to lose both games 2-1 to Ipswich. In earlier rounds, Norwich had beaten Dundee (3-2 on aggregate), Leicester City (2-2 on aggregate, City winning on penalties) and Motherwell (4-3).
During the 1973/74 season, Norwich beat St Johnstone (3-0 on aggregate) and then Motherwell (3-0) before losing to Burnley (2-5) in the semi-final.
In 1974/75, the Canaries finished bottom of their group. They beat Peterborough United 2-1 before losing 5-1 to West Bromwich Albion and 3-1 to Birmingham City. The games were all played in pre-season.
Programmes were issued for each Norwich game in the 72/73 and 73/74 competitions. Most of the programmes were wrapped in a standard cover design that was re-used across the games; as can be seen from the Dundee cover above.
For 74/75, a single programme covered all of the games within City’s group.
The competition was replaced by the Anglo-Scottish Cup.
