Josh Sargent signed for Norwich City from Werder Bremen for £8m in August 2021.
The Canaries had just been promoted back to the Premier League after comfortably winning the Championship.
Difficult first season
It was a difficult first season. Daniel Farke was sacked as manager early in the campaign after a disappointing start and replaced by Dean Smith.
In truth, City struggled all season and would eventually finish bottom with just 22 points having won only 5 leagues games.
Sargent scored twice in 26 league appearances. Both goals came in a 3-0 win at Watford.
Back to the Championship
The next season back in the Championship was much more productive for Sargent as he scored 13 goals in 40 appearances.
The Canaries finished a disappointing 13th place in the league table with Dean Smith leaving in December 2022 and replaced by David Wagner.
Firing City to the Play-offs
The departure of Teemu Pukki in the summer of 2023 placed greater goal scoring responsibility on Sargent and he responded in spectacular fashion.
Despite missing significant time through injury, Sargent scored 16 goals in the Championship during 2023/24. His goals helped Norwich finish sixth and qualify for the play-offs.
Sargent’s good form continued into the 2024-25 season as he scored 15 league goals in 32 appearances; again missing time with injury.
His performances earned him Norwich City’s Player of the Season award and recognition as one of the division’s leading forwards. There was more managerial change too. Johannes Hoff Thorup was appointed manager at the start of the season. He was replaced by Jack Wilshire in April 2025 as the season was ending.
Sargent’s final Norwich season in 2025/26 began spectacularly. Five goals in his first four Championship matches and named the division’s Player of the Month for August. Liam Manning had arrived as City’s manager but only lasted until November following a run of very poor performances and results.
Move to Toronto
In January 2026, Sargent told new manager Philippe Clement that he was unavailable for the 3rd round match against Walsall. Clement left Sargent out of Norwich’s FA Cup squad. The situation escalated and Sargent was subsequently training with Norwich’s Under-21s. Soon afterwards, the club agreed to sell him to Toronto FC.
By the time his Norwich career ended, he had scored 8 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign. Overall, he left having scored 56 goals in 157 appearances
World Cup Canary
During his time in Norfolk he also won 17 senior USA caps and played in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
One of the very few City players to have gone to a World Cup.
6 managers in 5 seasons
I really liked watching Josh Sargent play for Norwich. He always worked hard and scored some great goals to win games.
It was a difficult time to play for the Canaries. Relegation from the Premier League and then the struggle to find consistent success in the Championship.
The fact he played under 6 different permanent and interim managers in under 5 seasons illustrates how much change there was in his time at Carrow Road.
It was such a shame that he also picked up significant injuries in a couple of his seasons. You can only wonder how many more goals he would have scored if he had been able to play for the full season and the difference that would have made for the team.
Last City shirt
This is the shirt from Josh Sargent’s last appearance for Norwich City.
A 2-0 defeat to Stoke City at Carrow Road on 4 January 2026.
Sargent was subbed off in the 89th minute.
