Watford v Norwich City March 1946

The 45/46 season was a transitional season following the end of the second world war in May 1945.

To re-start professional football, the Football League decided to organize the teams on a regional basis.

Norwich took part in the Division 3 (South) – North region playing 20 games between 25th August 1945 and 1st January 1946.

This included matches with Clapton Orient, Ipswich Town, Mansfield Town, Northampton Town, Notts County, Port Vale, QPR, Southend United, Walsall and Watford.

Norwich then competed in the Division 3 (South) – North Cup region for 16 games between 12th January 1946 and 22nd April 1946.

Fixtures included games against Crystal Palace, Clapton Orient, Ipswich Town, Northampton Town, Notts County, Southend United, Walsall and Watford.

The FA Cup also re-started in 1946 but games were played over 2 legs. Norwich played Brighton & Hove Albion losing at home 1-2 and away 1-4.

Attendances at many of the matches for this transitional season were low.

The programmes produced were generally quite simple and often on poor quality paper.

With this in mind, it’s a wonder copies have survived and can still be enjoyed.

Shown above is a single sheet programme produced for the Watford v Norwich match played on the 23rd March 1946 in front of a crowd of 5,289. Norwich lost the game 1-2.

I was very pleased to add this programme to the collection recently.
